Maintaining your Home Appliances & Devices

We all use multiple electrical appliances every day. But how safe are they? Because these electrical devices are so widespread in our homes, we have a greater tendency to forget the potential dangers and hazards. It is important to familiarize your family with safe usage principles.

It is easy to observe safety guidelines when using electric appliances, cords, or bulbs. It takes only a little awareness and precautions to ensure your safety. Below is a list of safety rules that you might find useful. Please share this knowledge with anyone who may be interested.

Appliances

  • Do not bother going in for appliances that aren’t accredited.
  • Don’t forget to unplug any appliance not in use. Keep it out of reach for children.
  • Appliances that are used to heat the air, such as heating rods, irons, and electric heaters, should be cleared for air circulation. Hot appliances should not be placed near toys or clothing.
  • It is important to read the manuals of appliances before you attempt any repairs or upgrades.
  • You should keep appliances away from water, such as sinks, pools, or overhead dripping vents.
  • Don’t use wet hands to operate any electrical equipment or stand barefoot on the floor.

Outlets

Modern electrical outlets can be quite dangerous for pets or children. Keep your outlets safe by following these guidelines.

  • You should not keep unutilized outlets open. For children’s safety, you can cover unutilized outlets with plates or use childproof caps.
  • Do not overload the outlets with adapters or power lines.
  • Always place adapters or plugs in outlets that can accommodate them.

Cords

Cords can be used to extend the electrical outlet range. Here are some tips to help you keep your cords in a safe condition.

  • You should keep an eye out for any cracks, frays, or other problems to avoid unwelcome situations.
  • The cords should be secured to the outlets. If the cord is unplugged fully or is loose, you can replace the outlet.
  • You shouldn’t use extension cords in your home regularly. They are temporary and should not be used regularly.
  • You should choose the appropriate size and weight of the extension cable for your use. It is important that the extension cord you choose can be used outdoors or indoors.
  • The cord-outlet joint must not be left in a spot that is exposed to children or pets. These joints must be kept away from water, such as in bathtubs, bathrooms, or pools, and from sinks.
